Steve Melia started the discussion:
Does anyone have any stories, good or bad, about employers supporting or discouraging carfree living?
We are looking to set up city-based carfree groups, and one of the things I suggest they might want to do is
to address these issues. Some employers go out of their way to support people who want to live without cars.
Others make it very difficult, often without thinking: they just assume that everyone will want to own a car.
I wonder if we could create some sort of mark of achievement for the better employers - possibly a series of
questions about their employment and travel policies. When they write "must have a driving licence and a car",
have they thought through the alternatives? When they organise events in different places, do they make sure
people can get there by non car means?
Tony Emerson added:
A good issue to raise Steve. Lets start giving employers 'star ratings'. For instance zero or negative to city
schools who use precious playground place for staff car parks - 'with reserved for Head' space by the main
entrance. And bike shed way aroiund the back somewhere.
Whereas some schools, even if they do provide staff parking, it is limited and out of sight. But bike parking
is in sight of main entrance. 2 or 3 stars.
Health PCT's and GP practices would be very interesting to analyse in this way. In some PCT's and practices
home visiting staff (district nurses, health visitors, GP's) are actively encouraged to travel by bike to
visit their clients or patients - and many do. In others the person spec says "must have a driving licence and a
car". Some praising and naming/shaming would not go amiss. It might even help establish good practices when the
new employing bodies are being set up.
What experience do you have of employers, good or bad? And how could we best influence the policy and practice
of employers?
We would like to hear your views. |
